There are a number of ways to access Fort Smith, located just north of the Alberta/NWT border:
By vehicle all year: Edmonton to Fort Smith - this trip is about 1,300 km and typically takes about 15 hours. The highways are paved except for a short stretch between Hay River and Fort Smith. The gravel portion is in good condition and is frequently traveled by people with camperized vehicles throughout the summer.
By vehicle only in the winter: Fort McMurray to Fort Chipewyan to Fort Smith via a winter road. It is usually open from mid-December to mid-March but the road conditions are very dependent on the weather. Be sure to call the hotlines at 1-866-743-6111 (Alberta section) and 1-867-872-7962(WBNP) for road information.
By air: Northwestern Airlease Ltd is the airline based in Fort Smith. They provide service to and from a variety of places including Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Saskatoon, Grande Prairie, Kelowna, High Level and Yellowknife. By water: Fort Smith lies on the banks of the Slave River. You can reach the town in boat or canoe by traveling on the Peace or Athabasca Rivers, which join with the Slave. Just be sure to exit the river at Fort Fitzgerald as there are 4 sets of impassable rapids between Smith and Fitz.
